Hand Study – Create Every Day Challenge – day 14

Today is day 14, in my create something every day challenge 2014.  – I draw or paint something and post it every day of the year.  January’s theme is past, present, and future.

Tonight I opted to just study – and sketch out a hand.  I have been doing so much music related stuff lately I needed to work on my chops – fingers, hands -can be tricky.  Its not really anything epic but I needed just to step back and not worry about “art” tonight.  I think I have been trying to do too much with the every day stuff – which is fine but some concepts and paintings really need more time to work out.

So here it is, sketching day #14.

Also this, from a sketchbook in 1999 – useful feedback from one of my drawing/painting professors.  Forget which one.  But the message sticks.  See what I did there, kept with the theme…

Hello, I’m Johnny Cash – Create Every Day Challenge 2014 – day 13

Today is day 13, in my create something every day challenge 2014.  – I draw or paint something and post it every day of the year.  So far, so good heading out of day 13 of the challenge I am feeling pretty good about it.  The theme this month is “Past, Present, and Future”.

Today’s date,  January 13 – back in 1968 Johnny Cash performed at Folsom Prison, cutting “At Folsom Prison”.  Obviously a very important performance and record.  So tonight, Ile leave you with The Man in Black, Mr. Johnny Cash.

Lemon Juice – Create Every Day Challenge 2014 – day 12

Today is day 12 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”

I couldn’t think of anything to draw today, but while doing dishes I got a hint of lemon scent as I was loading the dishwasher.  I thought of my brother, affectionately known as “Lemon Juice” (you will have to ask him why).  So here you go, bro.

Hes also a lawyer and I didn’t get a model release form from him so catch this while you can before I get the cease and desist letter.

Johnny Manziel – Create Every Day Challenge 2014 day 11

Today is day 11 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”

Johnny Manziel, quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies – announced this week he would be headed to the NFL draft instead of sticking it out in College Station.  So, sticking with the theme, today I worked up something thats been on my list for a long time – an ode to “Johnny Football”.  I think everyone in Aggie Nation will dig this one.

Howlin Wolf – CED 2014 day 10

Today is day 10 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”

This day, in 1949 vinyl records were introduced by RCA and Columbia.  Elvis was recording his first RCA sessions in 1956.  And, in 1976 Howlin Wolf (aka Chester Arthur Burnett) passed away.  So tonight I spun some Howlin Wolf, mostly from the Sun recordings and went to work.

…and I will go to Texas Davy Crockett – CED day 9.

Today is day 9 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”

This day, in 1836 Davy Crockett wrote one of his last letters, I think the very last to congress – stating his intentions to move to Tejas (it was still Tejas then, not a state – Texas did not win independence until later).  A few days prior to his January 9 letter – he was having beers with friends in Memphis where he coined the well known idiom -“you may go to hell, and I will go to Texas” in reaction to that years elections.  See, he wasn’t a big fan of Jackson, or VanBuren or their policies.  And well he just lost his Congressional Seat in Tennessee.

I could work this one out a lot longer but I decided to stop at the concept.  not has happy as I was with last nights but hey, win some lose some.  Here you are, king of the wild Frontier.  (also, 2 months from now, back then, he will die in the stand at the Alamo).

Happy Birthday Luther Perkins – CED 2014 – day 8.

Today is day 8 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”

This day, in 1928 a man was born whom would change and mold music for many many years.  He shares a birthday with the one and only Elvis Presley – he is Luther Perkins.  the “guitar sound” of the man in black, Johnny Cash.  Im not here to argue who influenced music more or whatever, but I can say with all confidence that this man is critical to rock and roll and country music.  Boom-chicka-boom…

Luther Perkings

Boom Chicka Boom Chicka – Luther Perkins

I decided the last few create every day drawings were a bit too comic like so I went back to some painting roots, fired up Corel Painter X3 and worked a lot more painterly tonight.  Way longer than I should for a simple create every day, but hey.  Hone the skill, create, create, create.  This is the goal.

Cheers

LynnySaurus – Create Every Day Challenge Day 7

Today is day 7 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”  WHEW its been a full week – already!

So let me remind everyone – this is just to get something done every day – some sketch, cartoon, painting idea, whatever.  Some of the stuff I do might be “done” and fit for final publication or whatever but some are just ideas.  Tonights is about half way of both.  very cartoon like, and not as painterly as I like to work.  So far its been very fun, but getting a bit harder every day.  Each creation I make motivates me for the next though so we will keep trucking 2014 wont we?  Time marches on.

Yesterday I did PawPawSaurus, which is a real thing, and happens to be what Little Girl calls her grand-dad.  Tonight I asked her what she wanted me to draw and she replied, “A Lynny-Saurus”.  Well, there is no such thing as a Lynnysaurus.  Until now.

Today is day 6 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”

I wanted to draw a dinosaur tonight, while researching native species to Texas, I ran across the Pawpawsaurus.  Well, Ada’s grand-dad is affectionately dubbed Paw Paw, so… I drew a Paw Paw – Saurus.  I can see the resemblance…

My Dad Thinks he is a Pirate – Create Every Day challenge 2014 day 5

Today is day 5 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”

My Dad thinks he is a pirate.  He is building a boat and uses nautical vernacular to explain everyday things. Maybe he was a swashbuckler in his past?  Either way, in the near future is decade(s) long boat project will be done.  Pirate away, ol’ Man.

Pavel Datsyuk – Create Every Day Challenge 2014 day 4.

Today is day 4 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  January’s Theme is “Past, Future, and present”.

Tonight the Detroit Redwings play in my adopted home town of Dallas – facing the Stars.  Im pretty excited about them being in town so I thought I would make today’s challenge about my favorite player, Pavel Datsyuk.  I guess Im sticking with the theme still, since the game is in the future and I am excited about it.

I went a little less painterly with the figure this time around, more of a screen print looking thing.  I also went back to my old book about Michigan from day 1’s challenge.  The page is appropriately titled “The Best of Detroit”.

Hank Williams is floating in Space – CED 2014 part 3

Today is day 3 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  I bit off a bit more than I can chew AGAIN tonight, I would like to work on this a lot more…and obviously the background is stock image, but hey it works.

Sticking to the theme, “past, present and future” tonight I bring you, Hank Williams Sr. floating through space.  Hank passed tragically 51 years ago this week, so I have been thinking about him and his music a lot this week.  Ive actually had this idea in the hopper since about Tuesday.  Not to get to existential about things, but his legacy lives on here on planet earth, big time.  So many songs, so many folks influenced by his songs, and so on and so on.  Like branches of a tree.  That set aside… his music was transmitted by radio waves in the 40s and 50s, which would put those same waves somewhere like 50 light years away from planet earth (roughly, science folks if you can exact this one please do so).  Anyhow, this got me thinking, Ol Hiram is floating out there somewhere in space, in wave form… and if there is anyone listening they will hear that BEFORE Disco, Vanilla Ice, and Luke Bryan – all things that bode well for us not getting destroyed in some plasma ray hate bomb from afar.

Anyway, Cheers.  Installment 3 in the books.

Viking Nukes – CED 2014 day 2

Today is day 2 of the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014″.  Where I draw something and post it every day.  I bit off a bit more than I can chew tonight, I would like to work on this a lot more but I wanted to get the concept down, and done for the most part compositionally.

January’s theme is “past, present and future” Today I wanted to do something that meshes the past, and the present.  So, here it is.  Viking Nukes.  I dreamed this up late afternoon thinking what if a giant Viking came into the present and saw what we did to our home?  Axes flying, thats what.

So Much to Do, Detroit City – CED 2014 day 1

Bring it on 2014!

Today I start the “Creative Everyday Challenge, 2014”.  I have been meaning to start up a draw something and post it every day – type challenge for my new years goal and remembered seeing some posts last year from all sorts of folks who joined the challenge over at creativeeveryday.com so I started to join in with this community rather than go it alone.

So Much to Do, Detroit City

So Much to Do, Detroit City

January’s theme is “past, present, and future”.  Today I stuck with mostly past, grabbing an old book about Michigan, thumbing over to some info on Detroit and drawing a classic car over top.  I think it turned out pretty ok.  If I had more time I could work this up a little slicker, but thats not the point.  The challenge for me is to get something created and go with it.  Ile look back at some of the best over the year and re-work or put more time into them as I see fit.

So, enjoy “So much to do, Detroit City” CED2014 begins NOW!

The new and improved website

Please stay tuned, I have eliminated previous website data- and am in process of replacing it with a smoother, more interesting experience.  The old site was just getting to clunky and out dated and did not function the way I needed it to.  I will be updating and uploading portfolio items over the next week or so.  Also, coming soon – prints for sale!
